Merano’s Pulverturm Tower

The massive keep of Ortenstein Castle, known as Merano’s Pulverturm or Powder Tower, is the only surviving section of the once-imposing fortress. The nickname derives from a later use of the tower: in the eighteenth century, gunpowder was stored in the vaults. Remnants of walls and dilapidated stairs testify to a past connection between the fortified tower and the Passeirer Gate.
The biggest appeal of Merano’s Pulverturm Tower, however, is its spectacular position: the visitor has expansive views that encompass the spa resort and the villas, parks and manors of Merano’s Maia Alta (Obermais) and Maia Bassa (Untermais) districts. The Texel Mountains and surrounding area, called the Burggrafenamt, are seen at their best from this perspective: these views turn a visit to the tower into an unforgettable experience.
