Scena Castle

The spectacular Scena (Schenna) Castle towers above the village in a picturesque locale. The hill on which the castle stands provides minimal natural protection, so the massive architectural construction of the castle structure is little wonder. The origin of the castle goes back to Petermann von Schenna, who was Burgrave of Tyrol. His later successor, Ursula von Starkenberg, defended Scena Castle—in her husband’s absence—fighting bravely for weeks against the attacks of hostile nobles. Archduke Johann, whose mausoleum can be visited today, bought the castle in the nineteenth century. The castle’s turbulent history, testimonies to which are still visible today, makes it more than worthy of a visit.
